Square Watermelon – What’s Next?

Can you even believe how weird these look? It just seems wrong to me. Like foot-binding or Bonsai training or ear-clipping for dogs. What’s next? I shudder to think.

They say it’s done for convenience. Convenience? Apparently people are finding round melons take up too much space in the fridge. Why not just cut up the round melon and store the chunks or balls in a square container? I used a melon baller and sprinkled the melon balls with a little St Germain liqueur, covered with some plastic wrap.

If you want to use that rind (square or round) Cochon’s sharing their watermelon rind pickle recipe. This is an old-time Southern favorite.

  1. If space is a premium, why stop at squares? Why not thin, vertical slots a la cutting board shape…

  2. I like that, stackable watermelon slabs. Or how about a rectangular one that fits in the fridge door, like a container of milk? You know what the next thing is for the squatermelon … labels!

By the way, you’re ahead of the curve on the sazerac issue … NPR did a piece on them over the weekend, and you were there first!

  3. I like that, blades (like blade servers) of melon. Or Carton O’ Melon. “Squatermelon?” Dunno about that label.

Re: Sazeracs – the best are the comments by the legislators about propriety and drink…especially given who they come from…

  4. […] if the news of geometric fruit weren’t exciting […]
